I just received an email from Toddlers Can Read announcing that their books are back in stock! During the Black Friday sale, many of their items went out of stock. Since I already had most of the products before the sale, I didn't realize how much was unavailable. Now that they are restocked, I wanted to take a moment to show you the Toddlers Can Read decodable book sets.
First Set of Decodable Books
I have both sets of Toddlers Can Read decodable books, and I’ve shown the first set multiple times on my channel. This set is designed to progressively introduce reading skills from book to book, making it a great complement to the Toddlers Can Read course. I purchased the course about a year ago to teach my son how to read before kindergarten, and it was a game-changer.
The confidence I gained from teaching my son to read with Toddlers Can Read even led to my decision to homeschool. As a former math and special education teacher, I didn’t have a background in reading instruction. However, this program made it easy for me to successfully teach my child.
Introducing the New Advanced Set
If you've seen my older videos, you may already be familiar with the original set. However, I also have the newer advanced set. The packaging looks different – the original set came in a red box, whereas the new set is blue. Despite the visual differences, the format remains similar.
I was excited when these new books came out because I initially thought Spencer’s content was only geared toward total beginners. After completing the first set, my son learned to read within a few months. We used these books to continue progressing his reading skills, moving from simple three-letter words to full sentences.
My Son’s Progress with Toddlers Can Read
I have some clips on my channel of my son reading from the first set, starting with simple words like “tap.” Over time, he advanced to fluently reading full books. Although I don’t have current footage of him reading the new set (everyone in our house is sick right now), I can confidently say that he can read all of them.
Inside the New Advanced Set
The advanced set includes familiar characters from the first set. It starts with full sentences, compared to the first book of the original set, which only includes basic three-letter words. This makes it a great option for children who have already developed basic reading skills and need more challenging material.
One of my favorite features of these books is the included book guide. At the end of each book, there’s a breakdown of the sounds introduced, tricky words, and a parent guide. Spencer has structured these books to make the learning process easy for parents to follow.
If you find that your child is guessing words based on pictures rather than decoding them, the guide suggests covering the picture and slowly stretching each sound. This method encourages children to focus on phonics rather than context clues.
The Best Way to Use Toddlers Can Read Books
While these books are great on their own, they are most effective when paired with the Toddlers Can Read course. The course systematically introduces phonics skills, and these books reinforce those lessons. If you're looking for a structured way to teach your child to read, I highly recommend using both.
Durability and Quality
We purchased the Toddlers Can Read course in January 2024, and the books have held up well despite my two young children using them. I did keep them stored away at times to prevent excessive wear, but overall, they are quite durable—perfect for toddlers and young children who may be rough with books.
Fairy Tale Flashcards and Other Resources
In addition to the book sets, Toddlers Can Read also offers flashcards. I purchased the fairy tale flashcards last October or November and hadn’t shared them before. I personally prefer these over the truck-themed ones. The graphics are adorable, featuring words like “king” with a corresponding phonetic breakdown on the back. These are great supplemental materials for early literacy.

About the Author - Hey, I’m Sonia! I bought the Toddlers Can Read course back in January 2024 so I could teach my child to read before kindergarten. I was pleasantly surprised to find that he not only mastered basic reading skills, but is also a very confident reader when reading books for older ages! Taking the Toddlers Can Read course not only helped my son learn to read, it also gave me the confidence to pull my son out of public school. We are now a homeschooling family of 4, and I’m so glad we can teach him from home!
