About Me

I started my first teaching job in 2013. I didn’t make it through my first year because I became very sick. I was in a high-stress teaching environment several hours away from my family and friends.

I realized maybe my first year of teaching was a flop because I didn’t have proper training and support. In 2014, I went back to school to get my master’s degree in Special Education. I completed my degree and got my teaching certificate.

I returned to the classroom in 2016, this time is a suburban setting, close to where I grew up. I came across the same issues I faced in the inner city. A broken system that wasn’t designed to serve the kids. Moreover, my health worsened when I returned. In 2017, I quit teaching again. I never went back.

Homeschooling my kids was never the “plan”

In the months leading up to my son’s first year of kindergarten, I started to reflect on how difficult it was for me being a public school teacher. If I didn’t enjoy being in the public school setting, why would I send my kids there? Unfortunately, I didn’t see a good alternative to sending my kids to public school.

Almost 3 weeks into the school year, my son had already missed a few days due to sickness. I got serious about pulling him out. I found a local co-op to send him 2 days a week, so I could give myself a mental health break. Over a year later, that’s what we’ve been doing. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.

The public school setting was not designed for a family like ours.

We have a lot of health issues. Now when my kids get sick, I can keep them home as long as needed for them to recover. I don’t have to worry about getting in trouble for taking too many days off. The public school was designed to support able-bodied families, and that doesn’t fit our situation.

I’m not on Linkedin, so consider this my resume
