Hey, I’m Sonia— Special Education Teacher Turned Homeschool Mom

Homeschooling my kids was never the “plan”

In the months leading up to my son’s first year of kindergarten, I started to reflect on how difficult it was for me being a public school teacher. If I didn’t enjoy being in the public school setting, why would I send my kids there? Unfortunately, I didn’t see a good alternative to sending my kids to public school.

Almost 3 weeks into the school year, my son had already missed a few days due to sickness. I got serious about pulling him out. I found a local co-op to send him 2 days a week, so I could give myself a mental health break. Over a year later, that’s what we’ve been doing. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.

The public school setting was not designed for a family like ours.

We have a lot of health issues. Now when my kids get sick, I can keep them home as long as needed for them to recover. I don’t have to worry about getting in trouble for taking too many days off. The public school was designed to support able-bodied families, and that doesn’t fit our situation.

My Background & Experience

Education & Credentials

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education

  • Former Certified Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1)This is a fancy way of saying I’m trained to understand exactly how different brains learn and how to handle the behaviors that come with them!

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics & Global Studies

  • Conversational Spanish Speaker (I loved studying abroad in Quito, Ecuador—just don’t give me a grammar quiz!)

Teaching & Content Creation

  • 8+ years of teaching and tutoring experience, supporting struggling students to reframe the belief that they’re “bad at math” and encourage them to work at their full potential.

  • ADHD Parent Advocate: I created and led a Facebook support group of 200+ moms navigating the specific challenges of raising kids with ADHD. This role allowed me to see the "big picture" of the emotional and logistical stress families face every day.

  • Specialized ADHD Math Support – In 2018, I launched a private tutoring service for kids with ADHD. I specialized in closing foundational gaps while simultaneously helping students stay confident and on track with their current grade-level work.

  • Dedicated to sustainable homeschooling—I believe in creating a learning environment that actually works for your real life, health, and family.
